Since 2010, EMS on the Hill Day has been bringing EMS professionals together in Washington, DC to advocate for the needs of patients and the EMS profession. This year, the event will take place April 17-18 on Capitol Hill and will focus on educating congressional leaders about the needs of EMS. The National Association of EMTs (NAEMT) has been hosting the event for 14 years, with participation from paramedics, EMTs, educators, physicians, chiefs, and directors from all over the country. EMS on the Hill Day participants build crucial relationships with lawmakers, ensuring that EMS receives the support and resources it needs over the long term.
This event provides an opportunity for EMS professionals to speak directly with members of Congress about the most pressing issues faced by the EMS industry. Past topics have included the need for resources to help EMS prepare for the increasing occurrences of mass casualty incidents and public health emergencies as well as recruiting, retention, and other resource shortages. Additionally, the event discusses how the EMS workforce can help bridge gaps and reduce medical costs as an integrated partner in our nation’s healthcare system. EMS professionals face considerable challenges that can have a significant impact on patient care in their communities. Participants are encouraged to share their firsthand experiences with members of Congress, which helps to highlight the widespread struggles in the EMS community and can be a powerful way to advocate for additional funding.
The talking points for the 2024 EMS on the Hill Day will focus on the funding for SIREN Act Grants and the SIREN Reauthorization Act. The SIREN Act established a grant program for public and non-profit EMS agencies and fire departments in rural areas. The program aims to help with the recruitment, retention, education, and equipping of EMS personnel who often lack the resources to pay for basic operational needs. Additionally, discussions with members of Congress will take place to prevent cuts to Medicare ambulance payments and to garner support for bills that provide funding for EMS innovations like community paramedicine, treat-in-place, and transport to alternate destinations.
EMS providers play a crucial role in emergency and mobile healthcare. Advocating for them is essential to increasing awareness of their importance in our communities. Public Consulting Group LLC (PCG) will be present at EMS on the Hill Day to show our support for these dedicated professionals who are always ready to help us in times of need.
