PCG Cares Highlight: Building Homes with Habitat for Humanity Greater Portland

PCG team members at our June PCG cares eventEarlier this month, PCG staff in Portland, ME participated in Women’s Build Month with Habitat for Humanity Greater Portland. Women’s Build month is all about giving back to the strong women in our communities who hold it down, often on their own while raising children and working full time. The organization is working to build eight homes by the end of this year for local families in need. Families qualify for the program based on their income, receiving financial aid on the mortgage. Families work with Habitat for Humanity volunteers to build their homes.

PCG Mainers worked for two days insulating a basement, installing sill plates on cement foundation as well as other interior work in multiple houses. While it was hot, it was a meaningful experience and a way to give back to the community!

Reflections from Volunteers

“Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland reminded me how meaningful giving back is. I got to see so much passion and how that impacts the community. Even when the work was physically demanding, I felt motivated by the shared purpose of helping build a safe home for a family. Watching the progress made the impact feel real and rewarding. Overall, the experience reminded me how powerful collaboration and dedication can be in turning a single day of service into something truly meaningful. My heart has been filled with joy and I cannot wait to do it again.”

“As a single mom, I know how difficult it can be to afford a mortgage on top of all the other expenses that come with a child. Knowing the struggle and being able to give back my time and energy feels super rewarding. Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity not only taught me skills to use moving forward in my life but also lifted my spirits and gave me self-confidence. The significance of their work adds so much value to our communities, and I am so thankful that PCG supports its employees to give back on company time.”

“Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity is always meaningful, but doing it alongside my PCG colleagues made it especially memorable. It was inspiring to see everyone step up, take on any task, and work together despite the heat. As Mainers, we understand the real challenges families face when it comes to safe, stable housing. Being part of something that helps build not just a house, but an opportunity for a family to call it home, is incredibly rewarding.”

“I’ve wanted to volunteer for a project like this for a while, so it was exciting to hear that PCG was helping to sponsor Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland’s 2026 Women Build event in Standish, Maine this year. Although some of my home repair skills were a little rusty, it was both fun and inspiring to work alongside everyone who donned a PCG Cares shirt in the last couple of weeks and came together to support affordable homeownership in our community. Being part of a project that will make a lasting difference for a local family reminded me how powerful teamwork can be. Maine sometimes feels like an overgrown small town, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute, learn some great DIY skills (basement insulation! wood filler!), and be part of something life-changing for one of my new neighbors.”

“One of my favorite benefits we have here at PCG is the time we get to spend volunteering—and our Habitat for Humanity workdays have felt extra special. Working behind a computer screen all day, in Excel sheets and in meetings, it’s easy to lose sight of our why. Spending the day with our incredible Maine team, using our hands and sweat to build something that low-income families will soon live and thrive in, reinvigorated my passion and reminded me why public sector work is so important.”
